The Declaration states that one thousand two hundred and seventy pounds was raised to be invested for the prize fund. The essay, of 3000-7000 words, was to be on a subject related to India. Each entrant had to choose a “motto” so that they could not be identified by the examiners. The winner, at the outset, was awarded a prize of books to the value of £2 and a Gold Medal with the inscription, “Royal Asiatic Society: Indian Empire School Medal”. No pupil could win the prize more than once and, initially, only pupils from Eton, Harrow, Winchester, Rugby, Charterhouse, Westminster and Merchant Taylors were allowed to enter.
On June 9th, 2016, the Queen launched the Commonwealth Hub, bringing the main offices of the Commonwealth Games Federation, the Royal Commonwealth Society and the Commonwealth Local Government Forum a building to be renamed the Commonwealth House. What makes this move so noteworthy is that the site sits just across the street from Malborough House, the headquarters of the Commonwealth in London. Malborough House already houses the Commonwealth Secretariat, the Commonwealth Foundation and the Commonwealth Association of Tax Administrators allowing the seven Commonwealth-accredited organizations greater opportunities to partner, collaborate and innovate in the future.

On Monday 23 November 2015, eight Nova Scotia students who received awards from the Royal Commonwealth Society Essay Competition were hosted at Government House by His Honour, Brigadier General J. J. Grant, Lieutenant Governor of Nova Scotia. This invitation generated a great deal of excitement and was very much appreciated by both the students and their parents.
